Christophe Willem cash on his sexuality: “I never wanted to be the standard bearer of anything”


With eighteen years of career and six albums behind him, the iconic singer of Double Jeuoften nicknamed “The turtle”confided in an interview given to our colleagues at Tele-Leisure. The opportunity for the singer to look back on his journey, between failures and indecision. If he who prides himself on belonging to the troop of Bastards named his latest album (September 2022) Panoramait’s good because the artist reviewed his entire life from childhood, through the school bullying he suffered to his relationship with others “who can build as well as completely destroy.”

A way to Christophe Willem to overcome your fears. After the disappointing returns of his previous album entitled Riothe winner of the New Star had to take stock and overcome what he perceived as a failure. “Either you cry in your room and never make an album again, or you try to learn something from it”, explains the singer in the columns of the magazine. It was when he found himself at his parents’ house during confinement that he decided to reconnect with his passion. “I made a clean slate of everything I had already done”he said before announcing his choice: to entrust his ideas to others.

“So, are you gay or not?”

Paradoxically, it is in this album that the singer did not write that he put the most of himself. “This album was a kind of outlet”explains the one who feels more fulfilled today. If the artist says he has made peace with himself, he also says that it was not always easy, especially about his sexuality. In fact, as soon as he left Nouvelle Star, the first question he was asked was: “So, are you gay or not?” On this subject, the singer explains: “I never wanted to be a standard bearer for anything, but I claim the freedom of not wanting to fit into a box, of being with who I want to be, whether it’s a girl or a boy.”
