for Windows should greatly expand picture-in-picture functionality. In addition to videos, users will also be able to view images or open audio files within a pop-up window.
View an image, listen to sound while continuing to surf the web? It should soon be possible with PIP 2.0, the future enhancement of Chrome’s picture-in-picture mode.
A 2.0 mode accompanied by several technical developments
Until now, the picture-in-picture mode of Google Chrome made it possible to view videos within a floating window while going about other occupations on the net. The PIP 2.0 project goes further by opening up to many other interactive HTML content: audio files, images, iframes, etc.
The update should be accompanied by other technical developments for the player: better management of time-outs, improvement of asynchronous APIs, copying of elements to be integrated within the body of the pop-up window using the algorithm Document.importNode, etc.
Google also plans to improve the security of the feature, especially for interactive content. For a better user experience, the developers have, for example, thought of surrounding the window with a border and indicating the origin of the embedded content. Still in this security logic, authorization requests, keyboard events and automatic filling will be disabled in the picture-in-picture.
And as good news never comes alone, Google would also provide an improved design for Chrome browsers on Windows.
