- The free Google operating system chromeOS Flex is now officially launched.
- Old Windows and Mac computers can be recorded with it and put back into operation safely.

After a test phase lasting several months, the chromeOS Flex is finally ready for distribution: From now on, the free operating system is to transform old Windows and Mac computers that no longer receive updates from the provider into Google Chromebooks in no time at all.
For this purpose, bootable USB sticks can be created that contain the chromeOS Flex operating system, which is based on the CloudReady OS already acquired by Google in 2020. More than 400 devices from Acer to Toshiba are now certified for chromeOS Flex, which means that all internal hardware components such as screens, webcams and microphones are recognized by the system.
These computers work with chromeOS Flex
The new operating system should boot in seconds and enable up to ten-year-old devices without current original software to access the Internet via the Chrome browser and use various other functions. Access to the Android app store is not included.
However, Google has also formulated basic hardware requirements for the chromeOS Flex:
- Memory: at least 4GB RAM free
- Hard disk space: at least 16 GB
- Full BIOS access as administrator to boot
- Processor and graphics card should not be older than year 2010
- According to Google, Intel GMA 500, 600, 3600 and 3650 are too weak for chromeOS Flex
