The house, this protective home that we like to return to after a day of work, occupies a special place in the history of cinema, and more particularly in the horror genre.
One of the most emblematic is undoubtedly the one which was nicknamed “the Devil’s house”, this residence located in the United States in the suburb of Amityville, which gave its title to the famous horror film by Stuart Rosenberg released at the late 70s. A film adapted from the novel by Jay Anson, itself inspired by a dramatic news story during which Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his parents and siblings in their sleep.
Following this tragedy, the house had great difficulty finding new buyers, but finally, a year later, the Lutz family, faced with the low price of this cursed residence, moved there. But after a few weeks, according to them, they found themselves witnesses to paranormal phenomena.
It is their story which is transcribed in this horror film which subsequently became a franchise with around ten films released in around forty years.
Many other houses have been featured in horror films. We can obviously think of this disturbing residence, home of Norman Bates and his mother in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, or of this scene from It in which the six children find themselves trapped in Penny-Flaw’s trap in an old gloomy cabin full of traps.
But the house in the cinema is not only in this very specific genre, and certain comedies like Maman I missed the plane, have also been able to make this place a character in its own right, here a real playground for little Kevin, determined to repel the burglars, using mischief to set up numerous traps.
