This Wednesday “Vermin” was released on our screens, which features not very friendly spiders. The opportunity to take a quick look at the presence of these little creatures in the cinema, with this nine-question quiz. Watch out for bites!
Like sharks, crocodiles and even snakes, spiders have also had their hour of glory in the cinema. Jack Arnold, director specializing in B series and known for his fantastic masterpiece The Shrinking Man, was able to impress audiences in the 1950s with his Tarantula.
In the 90s, Frank Marshall took up this very specific genre of “arachnorrhea” with Arachnophobia. And a few years later in 2004, it was the turn of David Arquette and Scarlett Johansson to find themselves confronted with terrifying giant spiders in Arac Attack.
In this vein, Vermines, the first feature film by French director Sébastien Vaniček, was released last Wednesday, in which the inhabitants of a building find themselves prisoners of their habitat, prey to an invasion of venomous spiders. The decor
The film takes place in Noisy-le-Grand, where we can see Picasso’s famous arenas, designed by Spanish architect Manuel Núñez Yanowsky in the 1980s.
Bringing spiders to life
The director wanted to move away from the tarantulas and tarantulas that we are used to seeing in the cinema and preferred to feature a more familiar type of spider. He started with a real spider, the heteropoda maxima, then worked with MacGuff on 3D models in order to enlarge them as desired.
The commuter syndrome
Eager to tackle a more personal subject after his short films and inspired by his years of hardship, Sébastien Vaniček decided to explore what the media call the “suburban syndrome”: “I broadened my thinking around the crime of facial appearance, a subject that touches me a lot, and which was embodied with the image of the spider.
It exists and wanders around our home, but we don’t want to see it so we squash it immediately. The symbolism of xenophobia, of intolerance, it was there. With everyone being treated like vermin in this metaphorical parallel, the title became obvious very quickly.“
