This one we didn’t see coming. After The force awakens, The Last Jedi And The Rise of Skywalkera trilogy that disappointed a lot of people, lucasfilm And Disney+ seemed set to explore new scriptwriting horizons. However, the trilogy for a time planned by Rian Johnson seems to have fallen into limbo, producers David Benioff and Dan B. Weiss abandoned their idea for a film, Damon Lindelof would also have worked on a project before recently stopping, producer Kevin Feige no longer seems so involved in the franchise and Taika Waititi’s project also seems less and less concrete. We don’t even have any news from Star Wars: Rogue Squadronthe film by Patty Jenkins yet titled, but whose filming had been postponed.
It is in the midst of this chaos for the cinematic future of the saga that disney made surprising announcements during the Star Wars Celebration 2023. Three new films have indeed been made official: one directed by James Mangold (Logan, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny) taking place during The Genesis of the Jedi 25,000 years ago, a second directed by Dave Filoni focusing on The New Republic and connected to The Mandalorian and his spin-offsAnd a third directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms.Marvel)… set 15 years later The Rise of Skywalker. And, yes, he will even score the return of Daisy Ridley, while she camps a rey skywalker attempting to establish a new Jedi Order. Star Wars Xin short?
The program seems clear and complete, even if none of these feature films has a release date yet. Above all, the presentation completely omitted the previously announced projects: should we understand that Rogue Squadron, Taika Waititi’s film and all the others have been forgotten or transformed to become official productions today? We may know more in the future.
