City of Salzburg – parking spaces should give way to trees and green islands

More green in the streets, less sealed areas, a more pleasant urban climate – Salzburg wants to prepare for a warmer future. 13 car parking spaces could disappear from the street.

Trees have recently taken root in the streets of Breitenfelderstrasse and Rupertgasse. Seven more streets and alleys in the city of Salzburg are to follow soon, with trees and green space providing cooling. This is what an official report from the Salzburg Municipality’s Roads and Bridges Office envisages. 40 trees are to be planted in seven streets “We have a climate crisis, that’s a fact. We want to counteract the increasing heat in the city with the measures,” says City Councilor Anna Schiester (Greens). Around 40 trees are to be planted in the city’s seven streets. In addition, there would be green islands and unsealing of other areas. If the municipal council members agree to the project, the climate project will be implemented this year. Total cost: 300,000 euros. But not only the new green, also a resulting reduction in parking space is up for vote. In the seven streets affected, 13 of a total of 64 parking spaces would be lost.
