Clear rejection of EM plans: Russians examine objections to UEFA sanctions

Clear rejection of EM plans
Russians consider appeals against UEFA sanctions

UEFA is expanding its sanctions against Russian clubs and national teams, and the association has flatly rejected the federation’s bid for the European Football Championship. The Russians don’t want to accept that.

Russia’s football association RFU may want to take action before the International Sports Court Cas against the extended sanctions imposed by the European football union UEFA. The Russian Football Association has expressed its categorical rejection of the UEFA Executive Committee’s decisions, the Russian state agency Ria Novosti reported, citing a statement from the association. “The RFU will continue to protect its own interests in the cases already pending at the Sports Arbitration Court in Lausanne and reserves the right to submit new appeals,” quoted the agency from the press release.

On Monday, UEFA specified and further tightened the sanctions due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia is not allowed to apply for the European Championships in 2028 or 2032, nor take part in the Nations League or the Women’s European Championship in the summer. In addition, the UEFA executive had decided that neither men’s nor women’s teams would be allowed to play in European club competitions in the 2022/2023 season.

Despite the isolation caused by the war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia had tried to host the 2028 or 2032 European Championships. The UEFA executive declared the bids inadmissible. This was justified by the fact that applicants must ensure, among other things, that their behavior does not bring UEFA, other applicants, the application process or European football into disrepute. In addition, an application precludes the exclusion of Russian teams from all competitions because the host of a final round is entitled to a starting place.

UEFA and the world association FIFA had excluded national and club teams from Russia from all competitions because of the aggressive war. The most recent decision also stipulated that the men’s selection was not allowed to take part in the Nations League and was relegated from the B-League. The women’s national team has been excluded from the EM from July 6th to 31st in England. She is replaced by Portugal.
