LFI deputy Clémentine Autain on Monday supported the remarks of her EELV colleague Sandrine Rousseau, who sparked controversy by saying on Saturday that the barbecue was “a symbol of virility”, during the summer school for ecologists in Grenoble.
“Sociology explains to us that there is a very strong gender difference” in the relationship to meat, confirmed Clémentine Autain on BFMTV. “Women eat half as much red meat as men, (…) so there is a gender difference in the way we consume meat. And the people who decide to become vegetarian are mostly women” , she argued. “If we want to move towards equality, we must indeed tackle virilism,” she continued.

Deputy RN Julien Odoul immediately tweeted: “Bravo Clémentine Autain! There are physiological differences between men and women. The muscle mass of men has led them, since the dawn of time, to consume more meat (proteins) than men. women. It’s not +virilism+ it’s just nature!”
He also pointed out that he sat in the hemicycle opposite LFI deputy Aymeric Caron and that he thus had “all the time to observe the effects of hysterical veganism on his body. I will therefore continue my diet of Cro- Magnon made from French meat. In ecology as in nutrition, they are bad!”.
Saturday, during a round table in Grenoble, the ecofeminist deputy Sandrine Rousseau estimated that it was necessary “to change mentality so that eating a steak cooked on a barbecue is no longer a symbol of virility”, triggering the controversy on the networks social.
“When the grotesque reaches its climax… Stop these delusions!”, had notably reacted on twitter the deputy LR and candidate for the presidency of his party Eric Ciotti.
