The owner of Twitter believes that the banning of Donald Trump has “undermined public confidence” in the social network.
The closure of Donald Trump’s Twitter account, after the attack on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, was a “big mistake“said Elon Musk on Twitter. “I agree that Trump does not tweet. The important thing is that Twitter corrects a serious error by banning his account, despite no violation of the law or the terms of service. Uncapping a sitting president undermined public trust in Twitter for half of America“.
The statement comes a week after Elon Musk announced the reactivation of Donald Trump’s Twitter account, after a narrow majority voted in favor of reinstating the former US president who said he would not had no interest in returning to Twitter, adding that he would stick to his own social network, Truth Social. To date, Donald Trump, who has not written a single tweet since January 8, 2021, two days after the invasion of the Capitol.
The restoration of Donald Trump’s account also raises questions about the social network’s reinstatement policy. Shortly after the finalization of the acquisition of the platform for 44 billion dollars at the end of October, Elon Musk had assured that no major decision on the contents or reactivation of account would take place without the intervention of a dedicated council.
