Cloudflare crazy about Ethereum? A node that says a lot for its future in Web3

Cloudflare in the age of Web3 – Cloudflare is a company founded in 2010 offering security services to over 4 million users worldwide. Obviously, it remains on the lookout for innovation and has not let the Web3 go under the radar. Indeed, Cloudflare has announced its desire to operate Ethereum (ETH) nodes on its proof of stake version.

Cloudflare set to deploy Ethereum nodes

On Monday, May 16, Wesley Evanschief product officer at Cloudflare, announced the company’s desire to take part in the ecosystem of Web3.

In practice, the company should deploy several validation nodes for the Ethereum beacon chain. As a reminder, the beacon chain is the consensus layer ensuring the proof of stake.

“These nodes will serve as a testing ground for research. This will focus on energy efficiency, stability management and network speed. »

For this, the company will have to acquire 32ETH to operate each deployed nodes. Ethereum represents the first choice of the company. Nevertheless, this does not rule out the possibility of carrying out its experiments on other networks in proof of stake. The publication cites the Flow, Avalanche, Solana and Polygon projects in particular.

In its announcement, Cloudflare explains that it wants improve geographic decentralization network nodes. To do this, the company wants to deploy nodes in multiple geographies, such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

“This secures the network, improves resilience to failures and moves closer to the goal of global decentralization for all. »

Cloudflare is not at its first attempt

This decision is not trivial. Indeed, Cloudflare had already worked with various technologies close to the blockchain ecosystem.

In fact, as early as 2018, the company unveiled Cloudflare’s IPFS Gateway, a gateway for accessing IPFS data. As a reminder, IPFS is a peer-to-peer data distribution protocol. This is used by many Web3 projects for decentralized data storage.

“Cloudflare’s IPFS Gateway is an easy way to access Interplanetary File System (IPFS) content, without requiring you to install and run special software on your computer. »

Cloudflare

A year later, in 2019, the company announced a gateway to Ethereum. This allows you to interact with Ethereum directly from Cloudflare services. This service is relatively similar to that offered by Infura.

“Cloudflare’s Ethereum gateway expands the options for thin client applications as well as the decentralization of the Ethereum ecosystem. I can’t think of a better organization to do this job than Cloudflare. »

Dr. Virgil Griffith, Ethereum Foundation Special Projects Manager

Recently, it was the turn of the Cloud branch of the giant Google to put oneself at Web3. Indeed, the company announced the creation of a team specialized in this field. Its objective is to provide a series of services facilitating the establishment of infrastructures necessary for the proper functioning of Web3 applications.
