Cold Case Man’s body exhumed 27 years after being beheaded

The body of a man who was found beheaded in 1995 in Busset (Allier) was exhumed Friday morning as part of a new judicial investigation, said the Cusset prosecution in a press release.

A case never solved

“The body of this man, whose head has never been found, was exhumed this Friday morning at Vernet”, near Vichy, to carry out new “medico-legal” findings because techniques are evolving, “said the prosecutor of Cusset, Eric Neveu.

A new judicial investigation for “voluntary homicide” was opened following investigations carried out since May 2020 in this never elucidated case, added the magistrate. “No track is ruled out”, according to him. The two investigating judges of the judicial court of Cusset were seized and proceeded with the exhumation.

Christophe Doire, found headless in a ditch

On December 25, 1995, the headless body of Christophe Doire, a 28-year-old factory worker, was found in a ditch by hunters.

The man, who could be identified thanks to his papers and his clothes, had disappeared the previous December 16, after an evening spent at his brother’s. He left shortly before midnight, announcing his intention to go hunting the next day. His car had been found on December 18 in Cusset but no one had seen him again.

A first judicial investigation, opened at the time, had resulted in a dismissal in 2000. A second judicial investigation opened in 2002 had also resulted in a dismissal in 2007, according to the prosecutor.

Several programs and podcasts have returned to this affair, the latest being “Cold Case” on C8 and “L’énigme du chasseur sans tête” on RTL.

“I consider that there is no case not prescribed on which we cannot bring a fresh look. We must give ourselves a chance to investigate, ”said the magistrate.
