Collecting for 20 years – childhood dreams now fill a museum

Dozens of pinball machines, more than 1000 Lego sets, computers from every generation: Daniel Schmatz from Neulengbach in the St. Pölten district is not only a passionate collector of childhood memories, he is now displaying them in his own museum.

The Neulengbacher’s passion for collecting began around 20 years ago with the purchase of two pinball machines. The stock grew rapidly over time, and Daniel Schmatz now owns all the machines from the well-known companies Bally and Williams – a total of 99 pieces.

On the side, he began with the expansion and renovation of a square yard in Neulengbach. Just when he was wondering what else could be accommodated there besides pinball machines, his eldest son received his first Lego technology set. “For me it was like the next childhood flashback,” smiles Schmatz. And he promptly started a new collection. “I now have more than 1000 sets, including all of the technology kits and Lego trains that have ever been released,” he says.

For a few weeks now, the Neulengbacher’s collections have been on view every Sunday and public holiday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in his “Eitle Kinderkram”, and some pinball machines can also be played. In addition, the IT specialist exhibited another delicacy: computers of every generation with the corresponding operating system.
