To combat the spread of GHB at student parties and in bars, a group of female students from Nantes created an anti-drug straw.

An alarming phenomenon. For several months, GHB, also called “date rape drug” or “date rape drug”, has been increasingly present at student parties and in bars. Impossible to detect with the naked eye, this drug has become a real weapon for sexual predators who pour it into the glasses of their victims. All university towns find themselves confronted with this drug which claims many victims. Testimonials are pouring in on social networks under the hashtag #BalanceTonBar. If this subject worries university directors, some organizations decide to set up initiatives to help female students. After the condom for glass imagined by the company Drink Watch, a new creation has just been imagined: an anti-drug straw.

And this new idea, we owe it to five students from the University of Nantes. The young women explained to BFMTV that their project was born out of an entrepreneurship course. “Frankly around us, we quite often hear stories of girls who have been drugged without their knowledge in the evening. It is the accumulation of testimonies that gave us the idea for this project”, they explain before adding, “We also go in the evening. And it’s true that when we go out, the fear that it will happen to us is always in the back of our minds”. To detect the presence of GHB in a glass, the students imagined a stainless steel straw made up of a light yellow hoop. “In contact with this drug, the hoop of the straw would turn dark green”they inform, adding that they have worked with a chemist to verify the reliability of their innovation.

“Go in the evening with peace of mind”

If they do not yet know if they will market their creation, they are aware that it would be very useful for students wishing “go in the evening with peace of mind”.“We wanted to do something simple: an object that was not restrictive, discreet, easily transportable so that it could be used massively”. With the reopening of discotheques and other nightclubs, there is no doubt that this prototype would meet with great success.
