Nothing has announced an exciting new smartphone with the Nothing Phone (2a). The model is likely to provide strong competition to the Pixel 8a from Google and the Samsung Galaxy A55.

There have been rumors about this for a long time, now the Chinese cell phone manufacturer Nothing has officially confirmed it: The company is expanding its cell phone portfolio in 2024 and will be adding a cheaper variant to the top model Nothing Phone (2). This will be called Nothing Phone (2a).
According to Nothing, Phone (2a) was developed with the aim of providing an optimal smartphone experience for everyday use that focuses on the core needs of users and also incorporates all of Nothing’s expertise. According to the manufacturer, the phone (2a) uses some of the most popular functions of the phone (2) and is at the same time a clear upgrade over the phone (1).

The company does not provide any further details in the announcement. So it remains unclear when the phone (2a) will appear, what it will cost and exactly what features it will offer. Nevertheless, Samsung and Google are unlikely to be pleased with the announcement. Both manufacturers have very successful mid-range cell phones on offer with the Galaxy A54 and the Pixel 7a, which are now facing new competition.
For example, Nothing offers a similarly extensive update guarantee for its cell phones as Samsung and Google. It can be assumed that the manufacturer will also transfer this to the Phone 2a. This should also adopt the Glyph interface of the Phone 2. This is an LED back that can be used, for example, to visualize an expiring timer.
Are Samsung and Google countering with AI?
Many people may see this as a gimmick, but in the highly competitive middle class of smartphones, such features help you stand out from the crowd. It remains to be seen whether Samsung and Google have a similar ace up their sleeves for the successors to their successful mid-range cell phones.
One possibility would be to transfer the AI functions that have so far only been reserved for manufacturers’ top smartphones to the middle class. It is not yet known whether the Pixel 8a, expected for May 2024, and the Galaxy A55, expected for March 2024, will offer such features.
