The Gotthard road tunnel is closed in both directions until further notice due to a crack in the tunnel ceiling.
According to the Federal Roads Office (Astra), concrete parts fell onto the road, it said.
No one was injured.
An initial inventory showed a 25 meter long crack in the false ceiling, Astra wrote in a statement. “Concrete pieces came loose near the north tunnel portal and fell onto the road.” The cause and exact damage were not clear at the time of notification. It was not yet known how long the tunnel would remain closed.
Detour via the San Bernardino
According to Astra, traffic will be rerouted via the San Bernardino route and the Gotthard pass road. Those responsible would be working hard to repair the damage and analyze the cause.
