this new feature drastically boosts in-game performance

In its latest update, the ROG Ally integrates a new functionality within the AMD graphics driver. Called Fluid Motion Frames, its operation is similar to that of the FSR. We explain how to activate it on your machine.

The ROG Ally was an unexpected success for ASUS, which thought it was testing a market that turned out to be much more buoyant than expected. Also, the manufacturer has already announced that a new model is being manufactured, which would align with the standards of the Steam Deck OLED. But this does not mean that the current model is abandoned. In fact, a recent update even boosts the performance of the console.

But to understand how it works, you have to go back several months. Last January, AMD deployed a new technology called AFMF, for AMD Fluid Motion Frames. To put it simply, it is an image generation technology relatively similar to FSR, thus increasing the in-game frame rate and making the overall experience smoother. Essential on a portable machine, therefore.

How to enable AFMF to boost the performance of your ROG Ally

First of all, it must be clarified that although there are similarities with the FSR, the AFMF unfortunately remains less powerful than its companion, and this for a simple reason: unlike the FSR, the AFMF is not directly integrated into the game. Also, the technology mainly aims to compensate for the lack of support for FSR on certain games, by offering an intermediate solution. In other words, the image quality will be less good, leaving some visual artifacts here and there.

Despite these small flaws, AFMF remains a solution of choice for improving the performance of your machine on games that require it. According to AMD, it is even possible to double the FPS of a game by coupling the technology with FSR. However, since yesterday, the Asus ROG Ally is the first handheld PC to offer this functionality. If you have one, this is the opportunity or never to relaunch some games that are too demanding.

However, first make sure to respect certain conditions explained by AMD to take full advantage of its technology. Before activating AFMF, check the following settings on your game:

  • The game must reach the 60 FPS minimum
  • The screen refresh rate must reach the 120Hz
  • The game must be in full screen (not windowed)
  • There vertical sync must be deactivated

Once all these conditions are met, all you have to do is activate the option from the AMD driver settings. Here are the steps to follow :

  1. Check that you have installed the latest update available on your ROG Ally
  2. If this is your case, then open the application AMD Software from the Windows 11 desktop
  3. Go to the tab Gamesthen in Graphics
  4. Enable the option AMD Fluid Motion Frames

There is no need to restart your console, just launch the game of your choice to immediately see the benefits. If, however, the artifacts are too numerous and you want to deactivate the option, simply go back to the same menu. Note that the procedure is the same on Windows.
