Ukraine: Moscow uses balloons for reconnaissance

Mysterious flying objects over North America have been making headlines for days. Now Kiev is reporting that Russia is using reconnaissance balloons in Ukraine. Is there a connection?

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian military deployed a reconnaissance drone and several spy balloons in the Dnepropetrovsk region on Sunday. The air defense tried to shoot down the drone, but it is not yet clear whether this was successful, one said communication on Telegram. According to the military, the balloons were equipped with corner reflectors to jam radio waves from radar equipment.

Officials from the Dnipropetrovsk and Mykolaiv regions had previously reported a Russian attack with Iranian combat drones. However, the reports were denied by the Ukrainian Air Force. In early February, the Ukrainian general staff reported that Russia was conducting reconnaissance operations in preparation for an offensive in several Ukrainian regions.

Meanwhile, mysterious flying objects over North America have been puzzling for days. US fighter jets shot down three unidentified flying objects over Alaska, Canada and Lake Huron on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A week earlier, the United States had brought down a Chinese balloon that was allegedly used for espionage.

Could the unidentified flying objects be Russian reconnaissance balloons that have gone off course? So far, according to the authorities, it is unclear what objects were shot down and where they came from. An examination of the rubble should clarify these questions soon.

Beijing itself also reported sightings of an unidentified flying object off the waters of Shandong Province over the weekend. According to media reports, the authorities are preparing for a shooting down. Fishermen in the Yellow Sea have been urged to pay more attention to their safety. When viewing debris, they should take photos as evidence and, if possible, salvage the remains independently.
