Especially in cooler temperatures, glasses can be extremely annoying because they constantly fog up. Contact lenses are a practical alternative. ÖKO-TEST therefore examined many products, including private labels from dm and Rossmann. The laboratory tests show that there are some clear deficiencies in terms of oxygen permeability, UV protection and, above all, the ingredients of the storage liquid. In the video we explain what you need to consider when buying contact lenses online.
In the Issue 05/2021 ÖKO-TEST examines a total of 16 contact lenses. Nine of these are made of silicone hydrogel, the other seven models are made of hydrogel. The test shows that the latter consistently perform worse than the silicone hydrogel lenses. The products tested also included two monthly lenses from the large drugstore chains Rossmann and dm, which made this finding particularly clear.
The prices for the monthly lenses (six pieces each) can differ significantly. The cheapest model starts at around 1.67 euros per lens. With the most expensive monthly pack in the test, you already pay just under 8 euros for a lens.
In addition to the price, the following aspects are particularly important for the overall rating: oxygen permeability, UV protection, ingredients and other defects.
Hydrogel contact lenses from dm only “poor”
For example, the Visiomax monthly contact lenses from dm in the overall rating only with “inadequate”. In addition to the different diameter of the lenses, the laboratory also criticizes the clear deficiencies in oxygen permeability. If this is only given to a limited extent, the eye can even suffer damage in the long term. The criticism of Eyelike monthly contact lenses the end. They also only cut off with “inadequate”.
It doesn’t look much better for the competitor Rossmann. In the Best View Soft Monthly Lens it is still enough for the overall grade “sufficient”, but the allowed oxygen value is also criticized here.
In addition, the laboratory can detect the harmful ingredient boron in the storage liquid of all the products mentioned. There are also deductions for this in the overall rating.

Monthly lenses made of silicone hydrogel: Rossmann and dm can do it better
The situation is different with the monthly lenses from Rossmann and dm made of silicone hydrogel. Both models scored “good” in the test.
Both the Best View Premium silicone hydrogel from Rossmann and the Visiomax silicone hydrogel monthly contact lenses from dm can score in terms of oxygen permeability. But there are deductions at dm because of boron in the storage liquid and at Rossmann the laboratory criticizes the proven UV protection.
