Club icon Marco Reus is leaving Borussia Dortmund

A great time is coming to an end at Borussia Dortmund this summer: long-time captain Marco Reus is leaving the club after a total of 21 years. His contract expires and will not be renewed. However, saying goodbye to the Black and Yellows should not mean the end of his career.

In the summer of 2012, Marco Reus moved from Borussia Mönchengladbach back to his youth club Borussia Dortmund, twelve years later the dream marriage between the offensive player and BVB will end. Reus and Borussia announced this on Friday afternoon. In 424 competitive games he scored 168 goals and set up 128 goals. In total, he spent more than 21 years with the Black and Yellows. Reus’ contract would have expired at the end of the season, and there has recently been speculation as to whether the collaboration would be continued. It is not yet clear whether and where Reus will continue his career. According to “Kicker”, the end of the career is not yet planned.

“How should I begin,” a visibly touched Reus addressed the Borussia supporters on BVB’s social media channels, then the veteran dropped the bombshell: “Dear BVB fans, I was allowed to play in this beautiful stadium for twelve years “I’ve dedicated half my life to this club. I’ve experienced a lot of ups and downs, but in my opinion, the club and I have come to the decision not to extend the contract.”

Also with a view to the Champions League, where Dortmund will play next Tuesday (9 p.m./Prime Video and in the live ticker at ntv.de) Going into the semi-final second leg at Paris St. Germain with a 1-0 lead, the decision was important. “We want to go to Wembley, we want to bring the pot to Dortmund. And that’s why it’s simply important that the decision has been made and that the issue is then over. And that we all concentrate on this big goal,” said Reus.

The 34-year-old won the DFB Cup twice with BVB (2017 and 2021), reached the final of the premier class in 2013 and led the club as captain from 2018 to 2023. BVB managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Reus as “one of the club’s greatest players.” He wishes him “all the best for his future. We very much hope that he will return to BVB after his professional career, because there are plenty of exciting tasks waiting for him here in Dortmund.”
