Controls of the corona rules: cities are urging the police to help

Controls of the corona rules
Cities are pressing for help from the police

The federal government has announced that the new corona measures will be strictly controlled. However, when it comes to enforcement, the cities feel abandoned by politics. The support of the police is needed in order to carry out sufficient priority checks and to impose fines.

The cities are calling for additional help from the police in order to enforce the stricter Corona requirements. “The federal government and the states have agreed on strict controls of the measures, but left it open how they can work,” said the chief executive of the German Association of Cities, Helmut Dedy. “For this, the public order offices urgently need more support from the police in the federal states – and not just on a case-by-case basis, but through increased presence at Christmas markets and in public spaces.”

Dedy made it clear that the respective retailers, restaurateurs or Christmas market organizers are initially responsible for checking the 2G access certificates of vaccinated and convalescent people. “The public order offices are already showing more presence and are carrying out spot checks in the city centers and shopping streets.” Priority controls must be there where frequent violations are to be expected. “And it is also sanctioned with fines.”

In general, the new 2G rules and contact restrictions would be accepted by the vast majority of people. “That is a good thing. Most expect, however, that it is checked whether all these rules are actually adhered to,” said Dedy.

Therefore, the states would now have to clarify with the cities how the controls could be guaranteed. “Good ideas must now be on the table as quickly as possible.” Some federal states have already announced that the police should pay more attention to corona rules.
