cool widgets thanks to Material You

Google brings Material You everywhere, even in the smallest corners of its applications. If Google Contacts was already entitled to it for a long time, it is the turn of the application’s widgets to benefit from it, if we are to believe the modifications in the application’s code. Widgets that provide quick access to selected contacts.

Google Contacts goes Material You on Android 11

Google’s Material You makes it possible to harmonize the colors of its Android interface with those of its wallpaper: this can be buttons, applications, etc. This aesthetic DNA is showing up in many of the developer’s apps, including Google Contacts. This is the official Google application for managing your address book and synchronizing your contacts with your Google account. The media 9to5Google spotted changes in the Google Contacts source code that appear to modify the app’s widgets in a Material You way.

Google Contacts widgets revisited

Currently, the widgets of the Google Contacts application are not very enticing: only three are available, all of a size of 1×1. By clicking on it, you can either call a contact, send him a message or consult his file. The changes observed could constitute a complete overhaul of the Contacts widgets, with the arrival of Material You on them.

A 4×1 widget has for example been tested, it is named “ Favorite Contacts» («Favorite Contacts” in English). You can add up to seven contacts and it only displays the first three, but you can resize it to display them all, in two rows and two columns maximum.

Further customization of contacts widgets in Android

Another named “Individual contactallows access to a person’s file, but it actually has three buttons, to access it, call the person or send him a message. According to information from9to5Google, this widget has been in development since November: we can therefore expect it to be very close to the final version that will be released (if it is released). This is a widget that can be enlarged up to 3×2 to have the contact’s photo, but also buttons to access the message thread or call it.

We can also have it in 2×1 or 4×1 to display the full name for example. At the moment, these widgets are not available in the latest version of Google Contacts, but we can expect a release in the coming months.
