Cooperation ended – Burgenland stops scholarships for medical training

The state of Burgenland is reviewing the previous cooperation with the Danube Private University Gmbh (DPU) in Krems in medical training. There will be no scholarships for young doctors for the time being. Instead, new approaches are apparently being considered.

In order to counteract the impending shortage of doctors, the state concluded a cooperation agreement with the DPU in 2019. Two years ago the number of scholarships was increased. The state should finance 55 medical study places every year by 2027. Confusion over the end of the cooperation The cooperation has been put on hold: “A realignment of the scholarship awards is being examined, which is aimed at training doctors for Burgenland,” says the office Governor Doskozil with. No new scholarships are being advertised at the DPU. Existing studies can be completed. There are currently 120 scholarship holders in the state. The DPU apparently sees things somewhat differently. As the “Kurier” reported on Thursday evening, the private university had already informed the state at the end of January that it would terminate the agreement on June 30, 2024. The state said that “after a lengthy process, they had reached an amicable agreement.” Own training The state is also considering awarding scholarships directly to people from Burgenland who are studying at the MedUni Vienna, for example. As a longer-term perspective, the establishment of our own medical training in the country itself is also being considered. “The future design of scholarship awards and all other plans should be presented in the spring,” said the state governor’s office. According to “Krone” information, the state is currently working on developing its own university location for medical training. The site of the old Oberwart Hospital, which will be demolished in 2025, has recently been mentioned as a possible area.
