(Reuters) – Directors Francis Ford Coppola, David Cronenberg and Yorgos Lanthimos, regulars of the Croisette, appear in the official selection of the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from May 14 to 25, a year after the consecration of ‘”Anatomy of a fall” by the Frenchwoman Justine Triet.
In the running for the Palme d’Or, American director Francis Ford Coppola, who received the supreme distinction for “Secret Conversation” (1974) and “Apocalypse Now” (1979), will present “Megalopolis”, with Adam Driver, announced Thursday the organizers in Paris.
The Greek Yorgos Lanthimos, three times awarded at Cannes, for “The Lobster” in particular, will team up again with Emma Stone for “Kinds of Kindness” in the wake of the global success of “Poor Things”, which earned the American actress the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Fans of horror films will not be left out with “The Shrouds” by Canadian director David Cronenberg – notably starring Vincent Cassel – which received the Special Jury Prize in 1996 for “Crash”.

The festival will begin on a lighter note with “The Second Act”, a French comedy directed by Quentin Dupieux with Léa Seydoux headlining.
Two world premieres are particularly anticipated, out of competition: that of the new “Mad Max” by Australian George Miller (“Furiosa”), as well as the four-part western by American director and actor Kevin Costner, “Horizon: An American Saga.
Among the other films in competition, “The Apprentice” by Iranian-Danish Ali Abbasi, about Donald Trump’s beginnings in real estate, “Parthenope” by Paolo Sorrentino, “Oh Canada” by Paul Shrader, or “Emilia Perez ” by Jacques Audiard, a musical comedy set in a Mexican cartel with the star of the song Selena Gomez.
Among the other French people in the running, Christophe Honoré with “Marcello Mio”, Gilles Lellouche with “L’amour ouf” or the Frenchwoman Coralie Fargeat (under the American banner) with “The Substance”, which stars Demi Moore.
George Lucas, master of the “Star Wars” saga, will be awarded an honorary Palme d’Or.
The jury for the 77th edition will be chaired by American director Greta Gerwig, whose film “Barbie” dominated the box office this year.
