The warm months are still far away, but the summer vacation wants to be planned now. Our view goes to the Greek Corfu.

The beauty of the island of Corfu is its versatility: nature lovers and outdoor fans will find lush vegetation and varied hiking trails there. Culture lovers can go on a discovery tour in the old town of Kerkyra, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or let their gaze wander over the sea and the city from the 15th century fortress. In addition, the island with its many beautiful beaches offers plenty of choice for sun worshipers.

Three great hiking trails across the island

Hikers can lace up their boots on Corfu and climb the Pantokrator, for example. It is not only the highest mountain, but also the symbol of the island. Not for nothing does the name mean something like “all-ruling”. You also have a great view on the circular hiking trail to Cape Drastis. Lush green olive groves alternate with the bright turquoise of the sea. If you haven’t had enough, you can hike the multi-day Corfu Trail. Stops include the Lagoon of Koryssion, the village of Chlomatiana, the seaside resort of Messonghi and the seaside resort of Benitses. Incidentally, James Bond fans can follow in the footsteps of the agent here: Scenes from “For Your Eyes Only” were filmed on the Ionian island.

Even Empress Sisi loved Corfu

Of course, culture should not be neglected either. Even Empress Elisabeth fell in love with the island and had her summer residence built here. Sisi’s “Archilleion” is built in neoclassical style and peppered with statues of gods. Its history is checkered: sometimes it was a kindergarten, sometimes a museum, sometimes a casino – this does not detract from its popularity with tourists. Going further back in history is the fortress “Angelocastro” which is located at the north-western tip and dates from the Byzantine period. Should protect against pirates, there is only a small chapel on the Castel Sant’Angelo today, from where you can start great hikes.

Find love in one jump

Romantics will find their place in the “Butterfly Bay” or in the “Canal of Love”. The former takes its name from a promontory that has access to the sea on both sides and looks like a butterfly. The nice thing: The twin bays have different colors and water temperatures. The “Channel of Love” lures with a big promise: Whoever jumps off the sandstone cliffs will find great love. If you’re already in firm hands, it’s best to swim through the canal and think of your loved one – then the wedding bells will ring. Families should take a trip to “Agios Georgios”, a family beach near the neighboring islands of Matraki and Otoni.
