The Pole is surprisingly defeated by Alizé Cornet in the 3rd round of Wimbledon after 37 wins in a row.
The series is broken, the number 1 eliminated: After 37 wins in a row, Iga Swiatek lost another tennis match and thus missed the round of 16 in Wimbledon. The 21-year-old Pole surprisingly and clearly lost to the experienced Frenchwoman Alizé Cornet (WTA 37) in the third round. After 92 minutes and Swiatek’s 33rd unforced error, it was 4: 6, 2: 6 on Court 1.
Swiatek had dominated the WTA tour at least since her last defeat in mid-February (!) against Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai, won 6 tournaments including the French Open and put herself at the top of the world rankings.
Didn’t warm up to Wimbledon 2022
The last player to reach 37 consecutive wins was Martina Hingis in 1997, whose streak also ended after 37 wins. The last time Steffi Graf remained unbeaten was in 1989 and 1990 (66 wins).
However, Swiatek was strangers to the grass in Wimbledon this year; already in the 2nd round she had to go over 3 sets against the outsider Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove (NED). It was the end of the line against the brilliant Cornet.
Cornet is playing her 62nd Grand Slam tournament in a row in the “All England Club”, setting the record of the Japanese Ai Sugiyama. For the 32-year-old it was the 4th victory over a world number one, in 2014 she had also beaten the top seeded Serena Williams (USA) in the 3rd round. The round of 16 was her best result at Wimbledon so far.
