There was a corona outbreak at Edeka. A meat factory of the supermarket chain is affected, in which 69 infected people were reported.

New corona infections are increasing again in Germany. On Friday, the Robert Koch Institute reported more than 10,500 new cases within the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, federal states are planning the first loosening of lockdowns. The corona situation in the country is diffuse, while in some places the shops are open, elsewhere the numbers are rising again. Now there has been a major corona outbreak in Baden-Württemberg.

140 people in quarantine at Edeka after the corona outbreak

In a meat factory of the supermarket chain Edeka Südwest in Rheinstetten, 69 employees are said to have been infected with the corona virus. According to "RND", another 140 contact persons are now in quarantine.

The British mutation of the coronavirus is said to have already been detected in an infected person. This is known to be far more contagious. In Germany, around half of the corona cases are said to be due to the mutant.

Source of infection in the private sector

As a spokesman for Edeka-Südwest announced, two positive corona cases were initially noticed during a test in the meat factory last week. This week there were more to come. However, the source of infection is said to be in the private sector. According to RND, a total of 1200 employees * work in the factory, but so far there should be no further corona infections. This should ensure that the supermarket chain continues to be supplied.

It is not the first corona outbreak in a meat factory. At the beginning of the first wave of pandemics in March 2020, a mass outbreak at meat producer Tönnies caused an uproar. Since then, the working conditions in the companies have also come into the public eye.
