Corona current: Clinic reports outbreak in dementia ward

The Ingolstadt Clinic is struggling with a corona outbreak. Ironically, there are said to be several infected people in geriatric psychiatry – seniors are treated here.

Another outbreak of the coronavirus was reported inside a hospital. This time it's about the Ingolstadt Clinic. Several employees and patients were infected there. The problem: The coronavirus is spreading to gerontological psychiatry, where people with dementia are treated, for example.

The station deals with mental illnesses in patients over the age of 60. Due to their age, these fall into the risk group for the coronavirus.

According to "BR24", 17 of the 18 patients are currently said to have Covid-19. For this purpose, seven employees of geriatric psychiatry tested positive. In total, the station includes 24 people infected with corona.

Now the department in the hospital has been completely isolated. It is assumed that the corona virus was carried into the clinic via a patient, said a spokesman for "BR24".

However, the Ingolstadt Clinic is now facing a particular challenge: In geriatric psychiatry, compliance with the hygiene measures that are intended to curb the further spread of the coronavirus is difficult to implement. The patients in the ward are very limited due to their previous illnesses. For example, people with dementia may have difficulty orienting themselves or having memory problems, which makes it difficult to always follow the precautionary measures.

In addition, geriatric psychology deals with older society. However, this also has a higher risk of a severe course of Covid-19, as the Robert Koch Institute repeatedly emphasizes. It is not known how the infected people in the hospital are currently doing and whether they show symptoms.

Corona outbreaks have been reported again and again in institutions such as schools, but also retirement homes and hospitals.
