Corona current: Covid outbreak in prison

There was a corona outbreak in the Frankfurt penal institution. Numerous inmates have become infected in the prison.

The new corona infections are constantly reaching new record values. Almost 20,000 new cases were reported across Germany on Thursday. In the meantime, it is no longer just isolated sources of infection – Corona outbreaks of original origin are reported several times a day. Now the virus has also made its way into prison.

There are currently several corona cases in the correctional facility in Frankfurt. Initially, only one inmate had complained of cold symptoms, as reported by the "Hessenschau", among others. When his corona test turned out positive, a total of 140 inmates and employees were tested.

It came out: a total of two employees and 26 inmates had already been infected. So far, 28 people in the prison have contracted Covid-19. Despite numerous infections, no serious Covid-19 courses have been reported from the Frankfurt prison so far.

The insidious: Nobody knows where the source of infection is. The first inmate to test positive is said to have been in a so-called access quarantine before he was taken to the correctional facility. It is unclear where he could ultimately have been infected with the coronavirus. Visits to the prison were reduced, but still possible. Lawyers also have access to the building and contact the inmates.

The problem of incomprehensible chains of infection now extends across Germany. Chancellor Angela Merkel warned at the beginning of the week that sources of infection were hardly recognizable. This in turn makes it difficult to find the contact persons and to contain the further spread of the coronavirus. Now the measures of a so-called lockdown light should help to regain control of the corona pandemic.
