Corona current: recall of toxic disinfectants

The constant Corona companion is called back: Edeka is currently warning of disinfectants – the gel was sold in several supermarkets.

The features of our handbag are likely to have changed significantly this year. While not so long ago lip balm, powder and candy filled the bags, masks and disinfectants now dominate. Now one of the everyday companions is called back.

Recall of disinfectant gel: Do not use

Edeka has issued a recall for disinfectant gel. A "toxic effect" cannot be ruled out. Specifically, it is the following disinfectant:

  • Disinfection hand gel
  • Brand: Mir24
  • In the 50ml and 100ml bottle
  • 70 percent alcohol

The reason for the recall is that the disinfectant gels contain high amounts of methanol. Even in small doses, this can lead to severe poisoning. In addition, the manufacturer does not have permission to sell methanol, according to Edeka. Accordingly, the bottles of disinfectant are not provided with the actually necessary child safety device.

The disinfectant gel should no longer be used: the methanol it contains can be harmful to health – not only if it comes into contact with the skin and is swallowed, but also if it is inhaled.

The recall comes from the Edeka Group Southwest. Accordingly, the disinfectants are said to have been sold in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, southern Hesse and parts of Bavaria. The affected gel was available from Edeka as well as from Marktkauf branches.

Edeka is said to have reacted directly and has already taken the products off the market. Anyone who has already bought the gel can bring it back to the relevant branch. Customers should then be reimbursed the purchase price even without a receipt. Again: the disinfectant gel should never be used again. Edeka strongly advises against its use.
