Corona current: Several outbreaks in schools and nursing homes

More than 23,000 new infections in one day and a total of 12,200 deaths – the corona situation in Germany is becoming more and more serious. There are more outbreaks, especially in schools and nursing homes.

An easing of the corona situation in Germany is still not in sight despite the lockdown. On Friday, November 13th, the health authorities reported 23,542 new infections to the Robert Koch Institute, a new negative record since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of deaths from Covid-19 patients jumped 218 and exceeded the 12,000 mark and is now 12,200.

Outbreaks are currently occurring nationwide, especially in schools, clinics and retirement homes. According to newspaper reports by the Funke media group, regular operations at more than 3,000 schools have already been discontinued, and North Rhine-Westphalia is the first federal state to have decided to extend the Christmas holidays.

55 infected students at a Hamburg school

One of the largest outbreaks in an educational institution to date occurred at the Ida-Ehre-Schule in Hamburg: 55 students from a total of 25 classes tested positive for the corona virus there. The school was then closed and operations switched to distance teaching. Several infections have now also occurred at the Robert Bosch regular school in the Thuringian Ilm district: So far, seven students and one teacher have tested positive for the corona virus, 94 students are now in quarantine as a precaution.

Eight dead after the outbreak at Schongau clinic

While corona outbreaks in schools usually "only" result in restrictions and failures, unfortunately there are often deaths in care facilities and clinics. After 31 residents and eight employees contracted the virus in a senior citizens' home in Steinenbronn, Baden-Württemberg, two of those infected have already died from it. After an outbreak in a clinic in Schongau, Bavaria, eight infected people died. In the Hans Weinberger retirement home in Zeil, Lower Franconia, 14 residents and two employees were recently infected, the remaining 85 residents of the house have already tested negative and separated from the infected.

In view of the threat of staff shortages in the care sector, Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) has already spoken of wanting to employ nurses and doctors who have tested positive in extreme cases under the highest security precautions. However, at the current time it cannot be assumed that this drastic measure will actually take place.
