Now it’s official: Not US President Joe Biden (80), but his wife, First Lady Jill Biden (71), will be the US delegation at the coronation of King Charles III. perform at Westminster Abbey on May 6th. This was announced by the White House in Washington in a brief statement. Joe Biden informed the British monarch of the decision in a telephone call.
He said he was looking forward to meeting the king in Britain at a later date. In their conversation, the two also talked about the “strength of the relationship” between the countries and the “friendship between the two peoples”.
Is Vice President Kamala Harris Coming?
Rumors were already circulating over the weekend that Joe Biden would not be traveling to London in early May and would be represented by his wife. According to US media reports, Vice President Kamala Harris (59) will also be present at the coronation. There is no mention of this in the official confirmation.
However, British officials see no affront in the president’s non-attendance: never in history has a US president been present at a British coronation. At the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) on June 2, 1953, General George Marshall (1880-1959), known for the Marshall Plan, chaired the US delegation.
