In the canton of St. Gallen, 30 out of 40 beds are currently occupied in intensive care units, 22 of them with Covid patients. In the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital, the situation is particularly precarious, as “FM1 Today” reports.
All beds in the intensive care unit are occupied – and all with unvaccinated people, as the nurse Gerald M. * tells the medium. “We don’t have a single vaccinated patient on our ward at the moment. Overall, the percentage of unvaccinated Covid patients in our intensive care unit has been over 90 percent in the last few weeks. “
Nursing staff lose understanding towards unvaccinated people
The understanding of the nurses towards the unvaccinated is decreasing, explains M. further. “In the beginning I was able to deal with it better, but if it’s the same over and over again, you eventually run out of patience. Of course I look after all people equally and at the same level, but there is a lot of incomprehension. ” He cannot understand why one does not get vaccinated – after all, there is no better monitored vaccination.
The situation has hardly changed in the past year. Except for the lack of staff. «Our team has shrunk so much that we can hardly withstand the workload. Many left the station relatively fresh after completing their training and reoriented themselves, “says M., describing the situation. The nursing staff is not allowed to take a breather: “If we move patients, we will have the next one there in next to no time. That eats nerves. “
Long shifts, high concentration and psychological stress are stressful. “I could record myself on tape, everything repeats itself over and over and there is no relaxation. The thought of looking for something else, I think a lot of people have it right now. ” But M. doesn’t think about quitting himself. “The bottom line is that it’s still a very interesting, varied job.” (chs)
