At least 71,000 people died from the coronavirus in Russia in November. According to the state statistics agency Rosstat on Thursday, 87,527 people infected with corona died, of which the virus was confirmed as the cause of death in 71,187 of them. This monthly value is the highest since the beginning of the corona pandemic, according to the AFP news agency.
The Russian authorities are regularly accused of downplaying the extent of the pandemic. With a total of almost 600,000, Rosstat assumes significantly more confirmed corona deaths since the beginning of the pandemic than the government’s official corona task force. According to their numbers, only just under 308,000 people succumbed to corona disease. The difference is mainly due to different definitions of corona deaths.
Russian government declares corona discrepancy
According to the state agency Tass, the numbers of the Russian government for November are significantly lower with 37,000 deaths. The discrepancy is explained by the fact that only cases were recorded in which Corona was the main cause of death.
Government statistics recently showed more than 1000 new corona deaths every day for weeks, reports the German Press Agency (DPA). At this value, however, a high number of unreported cases was assumed. Recently, the corona situation in the country had eased somewhat – with more than 900 deaths within a day.
There are no major restrictions in Russia before the upcoming holidays around the turn of the year. The health authorities have called on people to avoid traveling as much as possible. Random checks on ticket portals show that trains are busy at the turn of the year. (chs)
