Corsica: three Calvi legionnaires die in a road accident


Three young legionnaires from the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment of Calvi (Haute-Corse) died in a road accident this Saturday, May 7, in the town of Calvi. The tragedy took place not far from Camp Raffalli where the soldiers are staying, said the firefighters of Haute-Corse.

The exact circumstances of the accident, which occurred around 5:40 a.m., are not yet known, but the Bastia public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation entrusted to the local territorial brigade of the Calvi gendarmerie.

“A priori the speed is part of the causes of this accident”, however, clarified to AFP Arnaud Viornery, the public prosecutor of Bastia, specifying to wait for the results of the analyzes of the alcohol level of the victims. None of the sources within the regiment contacted by AFP responded to the requests.

The car occupied by the three men left the road before violently hitting a tree on the side. Numerous emergency services intervened on the spot to try to resuscitate the victims.

Since January, eleven people have lost their lives on the roads of Haute-Corse, for 278 accidents and 89 injuries. A balance sheet in “clear increase”, according to the authorities.
