Cortana, Microsoft’s voice assistant bows out

The virtual assistant Cortana, in reference to the artificial intelligence present in the saga Halowill say goodbye by the end of 2023. The one that used to schedule reminders or answer user questions will no longer be supported as a standalone app on Windows 10 and 11 operating systems.

The Redmond firm had begun its withdrawal in 2021 by leaving Android and iOS smartphones. For the nostalgic, Cortana will always be present in Outlook and Teams applications, as well as in Teams Display and Teams Rooms, Microsoft’s video conferencing solution.

A more powerful tool based on artificial intelligence

With the advent of generative AIs such as Chat-GPT, it was clear the tech giant was going to replace Cortana with an AI-powered tool. Microsoft announces that users will still be able to take advantage of productivity features in Windows and Edge, in its Office 365 office suite, as well as through the Bing search engine, which includes a version of Chat-GPT.

In addition, the multinational relies heavily on Copilot, presented as a “centralized AI support”. This assistant capable of carrying out searches must thus offer the functionalities of a generative AI and should land in preview soon.
