The Swiss Federal Audit Office has criticized plans to build a new Swiss embassy in the Chinese capital Beijing.
The project is oversized and does not meet the economic criteria, writes the SFAO in a report.
The responsible department largely rejects the criticism.
The federal government should go over the books with the new building plans for the embassy in Beijing, starting with the size of the project. That is the advice of the Swiss Federal Audit Office. The project is currently on hold because the Chinese authorities have not yet given their approval.
Almost twice as expensive as planned
The SFAO asserts that the project does not currently meet economic and efficiency criteria. The planned costs would have almost doubled from 25 to 48 million Swiss francs. The responsible Department for Foreign Affairs (EDA) and the Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics (BBL) would have to decide whether to adapt the project.
The FDFA asserts that plans are being made for the next 40 years and questions the comparison of financial control with offices of the federal administration in Switzerland. An embassy abroad has different space requirements. The BBL criticizes the examination at an early stage of the project.
