Council of States Canton Aargau – Gabriela Suter (SP) gives up in favor of the center candidate – News

  • In the second round of voting for the Aargau Council of States there will probably be a duel between Marianne Binder (center) and Benjamin Giezendanner (SVP).
  • The SP, Mitte, Greens and GLP actually wanted to discuss how to proceed in a video conference on Monday evening.
  • Now SP candidate Gabriela Suter has surprisingly taken herself out of the race.
  • She wants to make room for center candidate Marianne Binder and thus prevent the SVP man.

In Aargau it is about the so-called “undivided class vote”. The SVP and FDP believe that the bourgeois canton should be represented by two bourgeois citizens in Bern. FDP Councilor of States Thierry Burkart was re-elected in the first round. SVP candidate Benjamin Giezendanner had the second best result.

Hot on his heels are the two women, Gabriela Suter (SP) and Marianne Binder (centre). On Sunday both announced that they did not want to rule out running for the second round of voting. Suter got slightly more votes than Binder.

But it was already clear in advance: If the two parties and other allies from the left camp want to prevent a second male and middle-class candidate in Stöckli, then they have to agree on a female candidate. Otherwise the SVP candidate is elected.

Gabriela Suter has the second strongest party in Aargau behind her, the SP. She ran an elaborate election campaign and is considered ambitious. Centrist candidate Marianne Binder always emphasized that, as a centrist politician, she was more electable to many people in Aargau than the left-wing candidate.

Reaction to shift to the right

Suter announced her resignation on Monday evening. On Sunday “political Switzerland slipped to the right. “It’s clear to me: the still vacant Aargau Council of States seat must not be filled by a right-wing conservative representative,” she argues.

The decision was made after an analysis and discussion with the party, she tells SRF: “We looked at the results soberly. Full support is needed to beat the SVP candidate. “He has a very big distance to the other candidates.”

Suter is convinced that Marianne Binder can only achieve this with full support from the center-left. Marianne Binder must show what she stands for.

What Marianne Binder and her party say about the new starting position is still unclear. The center nominates for the second round of voting on Tuesday evening.

Incidentally, Gabriela Suter and Marianne Binder both managed to be re-elected to the National Council.
