  • The centrist National Councilor and trade association president Fabio Regazzi is joining the Council of States for Ticino.
  • The previous Ticino Councilor of States Marco Chiesa (SVP) was confirmed in the second round of voting.
  • FDP National Councilor Alex Farinelli only received 2,406 fewer votes. He ended up in third place.

The SP lost its seat in the Council of States. The party held the second Ticino seat in Stöckli until last April. However, this seat has been vacant since the election of former State Councilor Marina Carobbio to the Ticino government.

National Councilor Bruno Storni, who should have defended Carobbio’s seat, withdrew in favor of Green Party member Greta Gysin after a poor result in the first round of voting. Gysin, who has been a member of the National Council since 2019, was unable to outperform the two middle-class candidates. This meant that the Greens could not save the left-wing seat either.

Assessment from Ticino correspondent Karoline Thürkauf:

For SVP President Marco Chiesa, his calculations worked out in his home canton of Ticino. With 40 percent of the votes, he clearly achieved the best result. That’s not surprising. Chiesa is popular. With his discourses about asylum policy, he nourishes and hits the nerve of the people of Ticino. Seen in this light, the choice of centrist candidate Fabio Regazzi is not surprising. The president of the trade association is politicizing on the right-wing bourgeois spectrum.

The traditional Ticino party FDP, on the other hand, is licking wounds. She cannot make up for the shame of 2019 when she was thrown out of the Stöckli. What’s more, the FDP did not manage to get enough votes from the left-green party.

Because the left-wing camp in Ticino is divided, the Green candidate, Greta Gysin, achieved no more than a respectable success. The male Ticino right has a good laugh today.
