Count Felix and Count Nikolai have already had to say goodbye to their prince titles due to a decision by Queen Margrethe, and now the next disappointment is likely to come: they are said not to have been invited to the change of throne celebrations.

On January 14, 2024, something historic will happen in the immediate family environment of Count Nikolai, 24, and Count Felix, 21: their grandmother, Queen Margrethe, 83, will abdicate, making Prince Frederik, 55, and Princess Mary, 51, the next king and queen of Denmark. As Danish media are now reporting, Margrethe’s abdication is likely to take place in a small family circle – her grandchildren Nikolai and Felix are said to have not received an invitation to this important appointment.

Count Nikolai + Count Felix: No invitation to Margrethe’s abdication

The Danish “Ekstra Bladet” claims to have learned that Nikolai and Felix will not play a role in the queen’s abdication. The website also writes that Queen Margrethe’s two grandchildren have not received an invitation to the change of throne in Denmark. This will not only hurt after the title scandal in September 2022 – Count Nikolai will most likely miss the most important moment in the life of his godfather, Uncle Prince Frederik.

The Danish royal family has not yet commented publicly on these rumors. Count Nikolai currently lives in Australia with his girlfriend Benedikte. If he received a spontaneous invitation, he would probably have to make his way to his home country soon.

Is the feeling of “belonging” for Nikolai and Felix continuing to dwindle?

Nikolai and Felix were born as the first sons of Prince Joachim, 54, and his ex-wife Alexandra Countess of Frederiksborg, 59. For around twenty years, the two young men bore the titles Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix of Denmark – until their grandmother decided in September 2022 to strip Joachim’s children of their titles in order to streamline the monarchy. Afterwards, there was coldness between the members of the Danish royal family. Even Prince Frederik admitted a “difference of opinion” in October 2022, although he defended it as a “family matter”.

In September 2023, Count Nikolai gave an interview to the Australian magazine “9Honey”. “It’s still a pretty sensitive topic, but I think I’m the same person I always was,” he assured. But he also admits: “It’s a change of belonging, in a certain way.” Count Nikolai still has to get used to his new title – and it appears that the removal of his title has led to a certain distance between him, his siblings and the first ranks of the Danish royals.

If, according to media reports, Nikolai and Felix were actually not invited to the change of throne in their home country, that would be a small disappointment for the two counts – and perhaps open up the rift that had been so carefully filled between the broken family members.
