Court paves the way – compensation: ski areas expect millions

The Constitutional Court has decided – to the delight of all Salzburg ski areas, compensation in the double-digit millions could now flow. Why? Due to the corona-related closure of the ski areas in the first lockdown, i.e. in mid-March 2020.

Bergbahnen Obertauern took legal action against the rejection of a compensation payment – with success. The basis at that time was the Epidemic Act, which was repealed only a few weeks later. However, after the constitutional judge’s decision, compensation should flow for this period. “I assume that every ski area will submit an application,” says Erich Egger, spokesman for the Salzburg cable car operator, with conviction. “Back then we could have traveled until Easter.” Egger reckons with a “higher double-digit million amount” for the mountain railways.
