Covid-19: find out which blood group is most affected: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

The Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread around the world. In France, and elsewhere, measures are being taken to limit the spread of this new coronavirus: confinement, closings of shops and restaurants or even the establishment of a derogatory displacement certificate. As the number of cases increases considerably, research on the virus is increasing. According to a new study, published on the site Medrxiv, some blood groups may be more affected than others.

Blood group A, more vulnerable

In recent weeks, the Chinese team of scientists has attempted to establish a link between blood group and sensitivity to Covid-19. To carry out their study, the researchers analyzed the health data of 1,775 patients tested positive for the virus and hospitalized in three hospitals in Wuhan and Shenzhen (China). Among them, 37.75% had a blood group A, 26.42% a B, 25.80% an O and 10.03% an AB. The risk of infection therefore seems to be greater in people with blood group A.

Less risk in people with blood type O

They then looked at the blood groups of 3,694 Wuhan residents who were not infected with Covid-19. Among these people, 33.84% belonged to group O, 32.16% to A, 24.90% to B and 9.10% to AB. The O therefore seem to be more spared. "Our analyzes reveal that age and / or sex had no link with the risk of infection", conclude the authors of the study.

For information, a person is of blood group A when he has only the antigen A contrary to the individuals of group B, which carry antigens B, those of group AB which have the two antigens. As for the people in group 0, they have none. 38% of French people are of blood group A *.

If their research requires further investigation, the researchers call on healthcare professionals to take this path into consideration. "People with blood group A may need extra personal protection to reduce their risk of infection", can we read about the study.

Respect barrier gestures

We remind you, in the face of infections, there are simple actions to protect your health and that of those around you: stay at home, wash your hands frequently with soap or an alcoholic gel, cough in your elbow, use a tissue single use and greet without kissing or shaking hands.
