Covid-19: France can produce up to 50 million FFP2 masks per week

What if the obligation to wear an FFP2 mask could happen in France? This is the question that health authorities have been asking themselves for several weeks in the face of the emergence of the new Omicron variant. Providing more protection, these masks are more and more in demand. BFMTV asked itself the question of production capacities in France.

“Yes, we already have a lot of stocks. There are a lot of requests from all levels, at the professional level, mass distribution and even Internet platforms”, specifies Christian Curel, this Saturday, on BFMTV. Regarding quantities, “the French industry is capable of producing 40 to 50 million FFP2 masks per week from the moment we organize ourselves a little, he continues, specifying that there are strategic stocks” , especially for caregivers.

A maximum price of 70 cents

Regarding the price of masks, Christian Curel recommends taking an example from our transalpine neighbor. “We do not control, on the manufacturing side, the selling prices and the margins that the dealers make. So I think it would be very useful for the Government to do exactly what has been done in Italy. […] with a maximum price of 70 cents. Today, you will have FFP2 masks from 25 cents, in supermarkets, at cost price, up to 70 cents. Those who are above the prices are probably a little prohibitive, ”explains the president of the Syndicate of French mask manufacturers.

In Italy, the obligation of the FFP2 mask has been in effect since December 23, in particular in public transport, cinemas, theaters and museums. Following this announcement, the country faced a price increase that could reach up to € 4 per unit. The Italian government and pharmacists have since struck a deal capping the price at 75 cents.

For its part, Austria has made the same choice for several months, and the mask is now recommended in transport and in shops. On the other hand, in Spain, it is not yet compulsory.
