Covid-19 in France: 232,000 positive cases in 24 hours, the increase in hospitalizations continues

The report issued Friday, December 31 by Public Health France confirms the extreme contagiousness of the virus with nearly 232,000 positive cases, a 146.7% increase compared to last Friday

The virus continues to gallop, pushed by the Omicron variant, particularly contagious and now the majority in France (62.4% of the tests screened).

On Wednesday, the country thus crossed for the first time the threshold of 200,000 contaminations in 24 hours. As of Friday, 232,200 cases have been recorded.

The number of hospitalizations linked to Covid-19 continues to increase, with more than 3,500 patients in critical care who are treating the most serious cases, according to figures released Friday by Public Health France. In total, French hospitals welcome 18,715 Covid patients, including 1,928 new admissions in 24 hours.

Critical care services, including resuscitation, take care of 3,543 patients (3,506 the day before) suffering from the most serious forms of the disease. And counted 320 new admissions between Thursday and Friday. In 24 hours, 189 people succumbed to Covid, bringing the total death toll to 123,741 deaths since the start of the epidemic.

The Covid in the region

248 patients are currently hospitalized in critical care services in New Aquitaine, announces the Regional Health Agency. The incidence rate increased by 103.5% in one week, reaching a rate of 492.2 (per 100,000 inhabitants).

It is still unclear to what extent this explosion of contaminations will result in serious, potentially fatal forms, overwhelming hospitals and forcing more drastic restrictions.

On Friday by presenting his wishes for 2022, President Emmanuel Macron announced “difficult weeks” but “real reasons to hope thanks to the vaccine”. Since the start of the vaccination campaign, 76.8% of French people have been fully vaccinated (i.e. 51,756,570 people), and 78.5% have received at least one injection (52,914,262 people).
