Two years ago to the day, March 17, 2020 marked the start of the very first confinement. Currently, there are more than 100,000 daily cases and for ten days, a new rebound in Covid-19 contaminations. Should we be worried though? Europe 1 takes stock.

A date engraved in the minds of the French. Two years ago to the day, March 17, 2020 marked the start of the very first confinement. At the time, we were at just over 1,000 cases per day, and Emmanuel Macron then declared: “We are at war.” Two years later, there are more than 100,000 daily cases and for ten days, a new rebound in contamination. Should we be worried though? The real danger today ultimately remains the trivialization of this Covid-19 epidemic. In the past three months, it has gone almost unnoticed, there have been 18,000 deaths and more than 25% new cases in one week.

Increased trivialization with the Ukrainian conflict

Even if the number of people in intensive care continues to drop, this form of indifference calls out. An increased trivialization since the beginning of the war in Ukraine according to Bruno Lina, member of the Scientific Council. “The Covid topic is less of a topic for many reasons,” he begins. “First, because things are still going better on the Covid front”, assures the professor at the microphone of Europe 1. “If we follow an important indicator which is the rate of hospitalizations and the number of people in resuscitation, we are on figures which are rather low. This relaxation is combined with stress which is unfortunately the result of other external constraints”, he adds.

To stem this rebound in the epidemic, the Scientific Council recommends that the most fragile people wear the mask in closed places or in communities, but also to extend the second booster dose to those over 65 years old. The latter is currently reserved only for over 80s and residents of nursing homes. The High Authority for Health should decide within a few days.
