Covid-19 vaccine: cardiac side effects

In young people who have received certain vaccines against Covid-19, adverse effects have been observed. Cases remain rare and the link with vaccination has not been confirmed.

After the cases of thrombosis possibly related to the AstraZeneca vaccine, other side effects are suspected. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), which forms the main US federal public health agency, say they have spotted a possible side effect of messenger RNA vaccines against Covid-19, such as those from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, in young people. It is myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, AFP reports.

These cases of myocarditis are rare because “relatively little” reports have been made, say the CDC without giving precise figures. They specify that most cases “appear to be benign” and that they were spotted at “adolescents and young adults”, in “the four days” who have followed the vaccination. US health officials also add that these myocarditis occur most often “after the second dose” vaccine and that they affect men rather than women.

However, the CDC points out that the link between these myocarditis and the Covid-19 vaccine is not established. Indeed, the number of cases does not exceed, for the moment, the normal rate among people belonging to this age group. In France, five cases of myocarditis had been detected at the end of April, in people who had been vaccinated with anti-Covid serum from Pfizer and BioNTech laboratories. As is the case in the United States, the link between vaccination and this heart problem could not be proven.
