9294 people died in Switzerland in 2020 with Covid-19 as the main cause of death. As the Federal Statistical Office (BfS) announced on Monday, Covid-19 was the third most common cause of death, accounting for 12.2 percent of all deaths. Far more Swiss people died after cardiovascular diseases (26.9%) and cancer (22.2%).

The corona-related deaths affected 52.7 percent men and 47.3 percent women. The gender difference was particularly striking among the under-65s. Almost three quarters of men in this age group are affected.

Overall, significantly more people died in Switzerland in 2020 than in the previous year. Normally there were around 70,000 deaths in Switzerland every year, in the first year of the pandemic there were 76,195. That is 12.4 percent more than in the previous year. According to the BfS, this increase is due to the pandemic.
