Covid beds – hospitals are preparing for the flood of infections

The Salzburg Covid infection numbers are still high, the beds in the hospitals are becoming scarce. The death of a 31-year-old Salzburg woman underlines the seriousness of the situation.

Two weeks ago there were 34 patients in the normal Covid wards in Salzburg, now there are 64. The number of patients has almost doubled. “The problem is that we have to assume an explosive development,” says Uta Hoppe, Primaria at the University Hospital Salzburg.

The hospital experts therefore activated the next escalation level in the Covid step-by-step plan. Means: Beds in non-Covid wards will be blocked in order to have more capacity for people infected with corona.

Nine out of twelve patients on the intensive care unit were not vaccinated
A case that is particularly shocking: the Covid death of a 31-year-old Salzburg woman. The mother of two was not vaccinated and lost the fight to the virus on Thursday.

There were twelve patients in the intensive care unit on Thursday – so the situation is still stable here. Of the twelve patients who require intensive care, nine are not vaccinated. On the normal ward, where the average age is higher, about two thirds are not immunized, according to the doctor. “That is why the third vaccination is so important. Especially if the immunization was some time ago, it is important to freshen up, ”says Hoppe. The Covid patients are divided among the Salzburg hospitals. Schwarzach, the CDK, the Barmherzigen Brüder and the LKH have a normal and an intensive care unit, in St. Veit, Oberndorf and Zell am See there is a normal ward.

Significantly more patients are expected
One thing is clear: the hospitals are expecting even more patients. “We can upgrade at any time, because it is to be feared that many more Covid patients will have to be treated in the hospital in the next few weeks.
