A wonderful day on the mountain ended in tragedy in Scharnstein (Upper Austria). A 34-year-old mother of two fell around 50 meters to her death on Maisenkögerl. Her husband heard the scream – unfortunately all rescue attempts were unsuccessful.
The local couple hiked to the 945-meter-high Maisenkögerl with the family dog on a beautiful Friday afternoon. Shortly before the summit, the 36-year-old man stayed behind with the dog. Reason: The path here is very exposed, rocky and difficult to walk on. The 34-year-old wife went first. Suddenly the Scharnsteiner heard a scream in front of him. Hiker rushed to help. The man from Scharnstein ran as quickly as he could to his wife, but she had disappeared from the forest path. She fell 40 to 50 meters deep. Another hiker also witnessed the incident and rushed to the mountain victim’s aid. Fatal injuriesHusband and witness began resuscitation and made an emergency call. Mountain rescuers from Gmunden climbed up, the rescue helicopter “Martin 3” came to support and the professional helpers took over the resuscitation attempts, but had to give up. The 34-year-old had suffered fatal injuries. In the now darkening darkness – the accident happened around 5 p.m. – the rescuers had to carry the dead woman to the next forest road. The crisis intervention team, which has now also been alerted, looked after the witness and of course the victim’s husband and the whole family at home – the mother leaves behind two children of primary school age. The mountain rescue helpers are also very affected; many knew the victim personally.
