Crdit Mutuel, BoursoBank… These banks which eliminate fees for small inheritances

Most banks charge for processing the death of a customer, debiting the deceased’s accounts, even if there were only a few thousand euros. In March, there will be a little fewer of them. A development which is consistent with the examination in the National Assembly of a proposed law on bank fees levied during small inheritances.

From March 1, 2024, dying at CIC or Crdit Mutuel (Central East Europe, Dauphin-Vivarais, Ile-de-France, Midi-Atlantique, Savoie-Mont Blanc, South East) will cost less. Because, yes, dying is often expensive in French banks, as MoneyVox shows (supporting figures and average details) every year on All Saints’ Day.

Inheritance bank fees: the broken promise of banks

As of March 1, 2024, the Crédit Mutuel federations cited above and the CICwhich also belongs to Crdit Mutuel Alliance fédérale, establish a free ceiling on inheritance bank charges 10,000 euros. And these banks also simplify the pricing applied to inheritances above this sum. A more than significant development since few, if not very rare, banks apply free tax on small inheritances.

In February 2024 (i.e. before this price change at Crdit Mutuel and CIC), only three banks offer free transfers on inheritances of up to 5,000 euros in assets: Crdit Agricole Charente-Maritime Deux-Svres, Crdit Agricole Center Loire, and BoursoBank, a brand whose rates are the lowest for processing the inheritance of deceased customers since up to 25,000 euros of assets are free of charge in the deceased’s accounts.

Bank charges: new tricks from banks to charge more for your overdraft

Free up to 5000 euros under discussion in the National Assembly

Is the Crdit Mutuel Alliance fédérale group getting ahead? Or is it simply a sign that bank charges levied following the death of a client are going worse and worse? The significant price change at Crdit Mutuel Alliance fédérale, on this controversial issue of inheritance banking fees, is consistent with the upcoming discussion of a proposed law from the PS group and carried by MP Christine Pirs-Beaune.

This text aims on the one hand to that these costs are in relation to the costs actually borne by the banks and refers the terms of their calculation to a decree taken on the advice of the Financial Sector Advisory Committee. And on the other hand establish a ceiling of 5,000 euros below which succession-related operations cannot be billed by banking establishments. This bill goes to the Finance Committee on Wednesday February 14, before being examined in session on Thursday February 29 during the PS parliamentary niche.

We are hopeful that this bill will be adopted

Does this socialist bill have a chance of passing, in the thick of the multiple texts tabled by deputies in the National Assembly? Yes, replies the Socialists and Allies group in the Hemicycle, because this text is already in 4th position on the menu for the day of February 29 devoted to PS proposals, ahead of texts on transport costs during the Olympics or on the deadline for payment of the first retirement pensions: This bill will therefore be examined with certainty in public session on February 29 and we are hopeful that it will be adopted, affirms the PS group. If this proposal is ever adopted, some banks will be ahead of the game…
